Phnom Penh, Cambodia, August 10-22
We’ll be working with a ministry in Phnom Penh called Sparrow’s Nest, operated by AG missionaries Paul & Larissa Dobson. Their goal is to prevent children from becoming victims of human trafficking by providing life skills & spiritual support in a safe, nurturing, day-shelter environment.
Gary Haugen, founder of the International Justice Mission, often quotes the words of Edmund Burke: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." In Gary’s book Terrify No More he states that good men do nothing because according to Alexander Solzhenitsyn, there are two standards by which we judge events in the world: near or far. If it is near to us, we care about it. If an event is happening on the other side of the world, we have a hard time working up concern or compassion about it. If we’re to take seriously Jesus’ words to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind, and our neighbor as ourselves, we can’t ignore evil, no matter where it happens. Jesus made it clear that our “neighbor” is anyone in need, whether down the street or on the other side of the planet.
What We'll be Doing
We’re taking this trip because we want to expand our circle of compassion to include at-risk children in Cambodia. And we want to come alongside a ministry that is working hard (along with others) to bring an end to human trafficking in that country. This is the first of what we hope will be many trips to Phnom Penh.
Sparrow’s Nest has asked us to:
- Help renovate a building in one of the most highly-trafficked areas of Phnom Penh that will serve as their ministry center
- Organize a basketball camp for the street kids
- Teach hygiene lessons
Will You Join Us?
We’d like to ask you to join with us as we travel to Cambodia, first with your prayers, and also financially if you’re able. Pray that we’ll be able to function in the 90 degree heat with over 90 percent humidity. Pray that that there will be unity on our team and that we’ll be a blessing and encouragement to the full-time workers in Phnom Penh. Most of all, pray that the children will respond and that many will find a place of protection and safety at Sparrow’s Nest.
